Sites That I Find Useful and Recommend
Computer / Technical Related Sites
Safari Books Online
Safari Books Online is the best learning resource I have for technical (computer, IT, digital imaging, etc.) topics. I really like Google, but Safari is much better organized having entire books that are searchable. I can bookmark areas of the book, add notes, organize folders and share with others.
Safari Books Online has a very large number of books available from several publishers including: O’Reilly Media, Prentice Hall, Addison-Wesley, Microsoft Press, Peachpit Press, Sams, McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, to name a few.
You can choose from a ten book shelf for under $25/month (at the time of this writing) or an unlimited subscription that includes videos for about $50/month. Safari also offers corporate subscription rates.
I really enjoy using Safari Books Online because I tend to want to try things as I read technical books so I am going to be in front of my PC anyway. It’s also so much easier to search for specific items or books on line than in the index of a paper book. Safari offers a one month trial. My advice – give it a shot.
NewEgg is one of the best places on the WEB to buy computer and electronic items. Daily specials, a wide selection of hardware, software, electronics and other items at great prices and very dependable delivery make NewEgg my favorite place to shop on line.
Entertainment Sites
Pandora
Pandora is an internet radio station. It’s not an annoying free music site trying to lure you into downloading viruses or malware to your computer. Pamdora is part of the music genome project and probably has one of the largest collections of music you will ever find.
Once you create and account, you can start creating your own stations and adding the artists you like to your stations. Pandora will automatically select similar artists and music randomly and play it on your station. You have the ability to reject “thumbs down” music you don’t like and prevent it from playing again by clicking an icon with a down thumb. You also have the option to give songs a “thumbs up” by clicking a thumbs up icon.
The free version has commercials – really irritating commercials in my opinion (I think almost all commercials re irritating).
The paid subscription is only $36/yr (when I purchased mine) and is certainly worth that much. You receive a desktop app to play the music so you don’t have open a browser and it contains several nice features.
If you like music, check out Pandora.
